Worldwide, 1/3 of food is thrown away, but the fight against food waste is not an easy one. The company "Too good to go" was founded in 2015 to combat food waste. Using their app, customers can buy unsold, surplus food at a discount. Since wholesalers and producers often cannot get rid of all the food they produce, the company Tradingpoint buys it. Through the 'Too good to go' app, surprise packages of these foods are sold at reduced prices to consumers through distribution partners in Swiss cities. Starting in summer 2023, Zebrabox will team up with Tradingpoint.
Food Waste in Switzerland
In Switzerland, food losses amount to 2.8 million tonnes annually. Per person and year, this corresponds to 330 kg or about a quarter of the greenhouse gases that we cause through our food. Starting with agriculture in the form of sorted-out, misshapen fruit, for example. In processing, as well as wholesale, unused by-products such as offal are thrown away or storage losses occur. In gastronomy, portions are cooked too large or there are buffet surpluses. In the retail trade, the waste is evident in expired products that are still edible. And last but not least, consumers generate food waste at home by throwing away leftovers or the last sip in the bottle (Foodwaste.ch).
Saving food with 'Too good to go' and Tradingpoint
The Danish company 'Too good to go' was founded in 2015 and operates in 17 countries. More than 63 million people are registered worldwide and more than 162 million meals have already been saved. In Switzerland, there are 1.8 million registered users and 6.1 million meals have already been saved (Too good to go, as of 15.09.2022). This shows that it is possible to make a difference with reduced-price meals. Now Tradingpoint comes into play. This company cooperates with 'Too good to go' and together they try to save larger quantities of products from brands like Kambly, Chiefs, Hero, Hirz, Nestlé, and others. This is because food producers cannot always sell all the products they produce in time. Tradingpoint buys the food, puts it together into surprise packages and distributes them via the 'Too good to go' app. These are sent to their distribution partners on a weekly basis. Thus, Tradingpoint offers a solution for wholesalers and producers to reach even more consumers.
Fight against Food Waste with Self Storage?
We say it's a dream team! An average Swiss household owns 10,000 items. Choosing self-storage contributes to a longer lifespan of purchased items, be it household goods, sports equipment and much more. Because of this aspect and the fact that something has to change in the relationship with our food, we decided to cooperate with Tradingpoint. Starting this summer, you can also save food at our staffed locations in Lausanne, Bern, Basel and Zurich. Reserving a package is done using the 'Too good to go' app. You can also find out about the current range on site and spontaneously buy a surprise box. So Tradingpoint puts together cool themed packs like "Best of Good Morning", "Best of Snacks", "Best of Bakery" and the exact contents are "a surprise". On your marks, get set, enjoy!
